Carol and her mother, Vera
Senior Life Journeys/Let’s Talk Dementia is a 501C3, faith-based company that is dedicated to the education of dementia for caregivers.
Executive Director, Carol Howell, shares her story below.
I remember the day I learned my mother was diagnosed with dementia. I asked the doctor, “Are you saying my mother will get dementia in the future?” He responded with, “No. I am saying your mother HAS dementia.” Quite honestly, my first thought was, “You must have failed bedside care class!” What I really needed was a caring, understanding individual who was ready to help me walk the winding and confusing road of dementia. I knew NOTHING about the disease except the horror stories that had crossed my path. My journey of learning to be a good caregiver began that day.
About two years later, I began journaling about my mother’s experiences with dementia. This writing was for my own well-being. It was a means of decompressing from the observations of life that were making me sad. The more education I obtained, the more I wrote. The more I wrote, the more aware I became of how confused so many caregivers were as they traveled this same difficult journey of dementia.
From this experience, the book Let’s Talk Dementia was born. It has since become an Amazon #1 Best Seller many times over. It is an easy-to-read caregiver’s guide that is scattered with humor to make the learning experience more fun. I enjoy traveling the country bringing education, knowledge, hope, and smiles into the lives of the caregivers I meet.
