I recently had the fun of taking Momma on a short vacation. We visited my daughter in Florida, and Momma had a blast. I did, also, but I learned a few caregiving lessons. Let me share them with you today.
1. Elastic pants are BEST
2. Not every bathroom is handicapped equipped
3. Sundowning seriously stinks.
ELASTIC PANTS ARE BEST – Upon arriving at my daughter’s home, Momma needed to use the bathroom. We had been up since 4:30 AM, and it was 11:30 by the time we arrived. Straight to the bathroom we went with no detours. It was then I learned how difficult it is for Momma to unbutton her jeans, pull down the zipper, remove the clothing, AND make it to the bathroom in time. I learned this very quickly and effectively because Momma did NOT make it on time. This gave me an entirely different set of circumstances to handle. Oh joy!
NOT EVERY BATHROOM IS HANDICAPPED EQUIPPED – Of course we all know this, but you don’t think about it until your loved one cannot rise from the toilet. Momma had to call for help each time she went to the bathroom. Which makes me wonder – Why don’t we install grab bars in every bathroom? It should be as standard as a toilet tissue holder.
SUNDOWNING SERIOUSLY STINKS – Momma had a few episodes of sundowning that made my heart hurt. She awoke the next day without a single scrap of memory from those events (and I am thankful for that), but my life will forever be affected by her sundowning.
When you are preparing to take your loved one on a trip, plan ahead. And by all means, take elastic waist pants!!
